Roger Goodell to be flanked by Cowboys greats at start of NFL draft

FRISCO, Texas -- Commissioner Roger Goodell will have some company when he walks to the front of the stage Thursday night to start the NFL draft at AT&T Stadium -- the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Booed in the past when taking the stage, Goodell is expected to be flanked by some Cowboys greats -- Hall of Fame quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, as well as probable future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten.
"I'm sure he's going to get a good response with us being out there," Staubach said. "If they boo, all of us are in trouble."

Cowboys fans have not been pleased with Goodell since he established and upheld Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension last season. Without Elliott, the Cowboys (9-7) went 3-3 during his absence and missed the playoffs.
To start last year's draft in Philadelphia, Goodell was soundly jeered and actually playfully implored the crowd to boo louder, which they obliged.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has had his tussles with Goodell as well. He recently was forced to pay part of the NFL's legal fees for the Elliott case as well as his fight against Goodell's contract extension, but Jones is hoping the crowd takes it a little easy on the commissioner and thinks about future drafts returning to AT&T Stadium.
"I don't know of anybody, maybe other than me, that's had more boos than Roger has," Jones said at the pre-draft press conference. "I know about how that works. I do hope we can be positive in our reception. We are going to do something pretty special, and he did have a final say in that."
Staubach's draft experience was far different than what those will experience the next three days. He found out by reading the Washington Post that he was drafted by the Cowboys in the 10th round in 1964. The AFL's Kansas City Chiefs took him in the 16th round.
Staubach still had his senior year at Navy to play and a four-year commitment in the service after graduation before he could think about playing professionally.

"It wasn't a big deal," Staubach said. "When you're young, five years seems like an eternity. I didn't know if I'd ever play again, but they wanted me to play for them and as it turned out I signed. The 10th round was a little better because there were fewer (teams), so being in the 10th round was relatively high for somebody they didn't think could play for a while."
Before the draft begins, Staubach will spend time with military members at AT&T Stadium as part of a USAA function to talk about his draft experience as well as his time in the military.
"There's a common denominator there and it feels good to talk to those who give their lives to protect us and I know what they have to go through and the ordeal," Staubach said. "I lost a number of classmates in Vietnam and teammates, so I'm very proud to be a part of the military even though I didn't make it a career. I did serve and I'm proud of that because it makes me feel good when I'm with military people."

A life well spent around sports cars started in childhood, clicking stopwatches at Vintage Auto Racing Association (VARA) events. An Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider was my yowling first car, followed by a metal-dash MGB, nicknamed Humbert. In my twenties, I took over a foundering sports car magazine, building an international network of writers, photographers and fine artists. Ford Special Vehicle Team recruited me to bolster management of creative efforts, but the engineers soon had me along for clay reviews, and engineering development drives. I drafted white papers that ultimately led to several highly collectible performance cars. After a study team project in Hiroshima to validate a relaunch of Mazdaspeed, Scion and Toyota engaged me to develop website content, balancing between marketing, product planning and legal review. And now home to exceptional cars and gran turismo travel. For relaxation, I love to shoulder a fine shotgun and cultivate our rose garden.

Similar in basic concept to the Tour de France bicycle race we all know today, the Tour de France motorsport competition was staged over several days each year between 1899 and 1986. Ferrari’s 250 GT Competizione was produced from 1956 to ‘59 to suit the unique mix of circuit racing, hill climb and drag race stages of the Tour de France. It so dominated the event that the model was nicknamed for it.

In many industries, it can be tough enough to find people with the hard skills needed to fill your most urgent job openings. So how much harder is it when you're looking for candidates who can also bring passion and empathy to the workplace?
This is the challenge Franciscan Health Inc. faced as a faith-based, integrated healthcare system serving patients in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan.
"About four years ago, we were having big issues," says Ellen Page, Corporate Director of Recruiting at Franciscan Health Inc. "We had a lot of openings and not nearly enough candidates."
In fact, Page estimates the healthcare system was running close to 1,600 unfilled positions. "We take care of patients," she says, "we have to have enough staff."
For Franciscan Health, the remedy was relatively straightforward -- come up with a new approach to employee recruitment that gave the organization a greater opportunity to find exactly the kind of qualified people it was looking for.
A Global Shortage of Healthcare Workers
Franciscan Health's dilemma was understandable. There has been a growing shortage of healthcare workers in the United States for some time now. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, for example, cites studies forecasting an expected shortage of registered nurses across the country between 2009 and 2030. And it isn't only a domestic problem. The World Health Organization predicts the world will be short 12.9 million healthcare workers by 2035.
In light of such sobering statistics, Franciscan Health decided to implement a multi-pronged HR strategy. First, the organization rolled out SAP SuccessFactors solutions to establish a standard process for employee recruiting and onboarding across its network of hospitals.
"We have 14 hospitals, and we probably had 14 different processes," notes Jeremy Shultz, a human resources manager at Franciscan Health.
As Shultz explains, job postings were done manually and the application process was often cumbersome. At some facilities, job candidates had to literally walk in the front door to hand in their applications. And once a person was hired, the onboarding process was inconsistent and paper-based.
More than a Numbers Game
That all changed with Franciscan Health's new approach to HR.
With a recruiting system that now automatically posts job openings to major employee websites, the number of job candidates has sky-rocketed. "The numbers are staggering," Page says. "We were getting about 20,000 applications a year in the past. Recently, we had over 75,000 in just seven months."
But boosting the number of applicants has only been part of Franciscan Health's strategy for nurturing a passionate workforce.
"Our new career site helps build the Franciscan Health brand and communicate specific values to potential candidates right from the start," says Shultz. And today, the healthcare system's job postings explicitly emphasize words like "mission," "family," and "empathy."
Franciscan Health also benefits from a more streamlined and consistent onboarding process at its various hospitals. Most of the necessary tasks and associated information are now readily accessible online. "And all new hires are getting the same messaging," says Shultz.
Two Good Examples
In many respects, Shultz and Page themselves seem to represent exactly the kind of employees that Franciscan Health seeks.
"It was Franciscan Health's mission and values that first attracted me to this job," Shultz says. "Now my main goal in HR is to attract job candidates who will best fit within these ideals and to help create a better employee experience for our people."
Page clearly agrees with such sentiments.
"For me personally, recruiting is a passion," says Page. "When you find the right candidate -- someone who will take care of our patients like they would their own mother or sister -- there's nothing better than that."

The Story Behind The New Radical Electric Car Brand Polestar

The Story Behind The New Radical Electric Car Brand Polestar

, I cover cars and design — and where they intersect Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.
Thomas Ingenlath with Polestar 1 at the Geneva Motor Show Polestar
Thomas Ingenlath with Polestar 1 at the Geneva Motor Show
“We need to make brave decisions and stand by them,” starts Thomas Ingenlath referring to Polestar. The new car brand was announced last October as an independent electric company to sit alongside Volvo in the Geely Auto family. I am meeting the chief executive officer in Geneva on the marque's debut motor show stand. On the one side is Volvo’s pavilion – serene, clad in classic Scandinavian light natural wood. In contrast, the Polestar stand is cold, dark, minimalist, mysterious, exhibiting the company’s sole model the Polestar 1 in clinical white.
When he first saw the exhibition space, Ingenlath couldn’t contain his excitement. The white of Polestar 1 magnifies the technical feel of this space, the only element of color here is Ingenlath’s bold mustard suite which looks like it has been carefully selected to match certain accents of the car. “We wanted to make a show stand that isn’t overcrowded. Of course, we don’t have many products at this stage but the idea is to get out of the traditional motor show behavior of loud music and lots of spotlights. Instead we are treating the car with more respect, allowing it the right light and space to breathe.”

Polestar 1 is the first product to be born into the electric brand

The Polestar 1 is a grand touring coupรฉ based on Volvo's Concept Coupรฉ - the 600-horsepower electric performance hybrid powertrain promises 150 km (93 miles) of pure electric range. The company plans to build a maximum of 500 of this $182,000 car annually at the new facility in Chengdu, China which will begin production later this year. The building is the work of Norwegian architect practice Snรถhetta and promises to be the most sustainable car factory in the country.

Ingenlath says, “the facility is modern, progressive, technically advanced and environmentally responsible. It will be an embodiment of the Polestar brand.” He feels the spirit of the new company owes much to Geely. The Chinese, he feels, are generally more open to a business adventure like this. “The idea for a company like Geely to say Polestar will be stand-alone, that it will develop on its own, to be this brave and set up a new brand doesn’t happen that often.”
The visual expression reflects the trend for more refined and reduced design Polestar
The visual expression reflects the trend for more refined and reduced design
The visual expression of Polestar speaks of its Volvo Scandinavian heritage but is also a reflection of the general trend for more refined and reduced design. Ingenlath explains: “Four years ago, we would have had big discussions on how such purity of design will resonate with the Chinese culture. Nowadays that has pretty much gone. The idea of pure product expression, something that we proved with the success of Volvo products, is an international expression now seen in architecture, design and fashion.”
The Polestar grille will become a "smart zone" in the future Polestar
The Polestar grille will become a "smart zone" in the future
Ingenlath is very much aware of the selling powers of Scandinavian design having held the position of vice president of design at Volvo in Sweden before taking on Polestar challenge. He believes he has a chance to be more daring here with technical materials. “You could say the brand is masculine,” he says then agreeing the term technical is possibly more of an appropriate one for Polestar. “We have a super reduced clear-cut style here.”
The Polestar 1 retains a classic car vernacular replete with a grille at the front, an element that is not so essential in an electric car. I ask if he plans to retain this in the future. “The grille will make an interesting story,” he smiles. “Yes, we could take it away but I feel the car needs a face with eyes, a nose and a mouth. Looking ahead we will bring new functions and features into what has essentially been an air intake to make it more of a smart zone. The grille will have a meaningful purpose.”
The eco Polestar production center by architect Snรถhetta will open in China Polestar
The eco Polestar production center by architect Snรถhetta will open in China
As with any new company there is an air of excitement here. I ask Ingenlath where he sees the brand heading. “Our journey starts with the Polestar 1, a car that is connected to Concept Coupรฉ. For the Polestar 2 though you will see how the design and interior will evolve.” Ingenlath makes it very clear that customers will not have a free reign inside Polestar cars. Instead his team will direct design themes. “I think for a company with such an appreciation of great design we have to make very clear choices. If you have a certain ambiance created in the interior you cannot allow the customer to come along and alter this. I think we take away an incredible headache for customer of being lost in the sheer amount of choice they have these days. I don’t believe this is a positive experience.”
Polestar 1 design is based on the Volvo Concept Coupรฉ Polestar
The Polestar 1 design is based on the Volvo Concept Coupรฉ
Ingenlath doesn’t like branding Polestar customers but feels they need to be progressive and open minded and not tied down by heritage brands. Not surprisingly Tesla is a company he much admires as he does Spotify, the Scandinavian tech giant that has altered how we listen and own music. “We have an interesting offer for a younger audience especially in how we treat the HMI (human machine interface) - a big topic for us. On the other hand, the educated customer of a certain age can also be interested in technology.”
The ambition is to keep the purity, this uncompromised approach, alive. “This is what we feel people will desire and what resonates with this brand,” says Ingenlath. As a parting note, I ask the car designer and CEO his thoughts on the Polestar 2 and the products that follow which can now be sketched on a clean sheet of paper. He retorts: “Let us not kid ourselves - there are always boundaries set by technology. Design is about giving meaning and artistry to technology. We have gained some freedom with the electric drivetrain but not to the degree that the aesthetics of the car will change. It requires another development and that is autonomous driving which will open the doors to radical design,” he offers before adding, “however, the car without a steering wheel is not the core of Polestar's business.”

Maserati has finally given its Levante SUV what it has needed all along, a Ferrari-engineered twin-turbo V8 that delivers 590 horsepower and 538 lb. ft. through an all-wheel drive system. Using Launch Control, it can hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and with a long enough road tops out at 187 mph.

22-inch forged aluminum “Orione” wheels are the largest ever fitted on a Maserati. available in both polished and matte finishes.
Production starts this summer at the Maserati plant in Mirafiori, just outside Turin. The engine has been modified to work with the Maserati all-wheel drive system, but it’s a relative of the Ferrari-engineered and assembled V8s seen in other Italian cars.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide is a Harley Softail for Saturday afternoon and weekend overnight rides.
Harley owns more than half the U.S. motorcycle market, and the boys from Milwaukee are masters of batch-built and demand-pull variations of each chassis, exercising marketing and design skills to match or surpass the very best European supercar makers I regularly deal with.
H-D
Saddlebags and fairing clipped into place, Sport Glide can serve as a weekday commuter or a two-up traveler for Saturday tours of beautiful destinations.
Harley stated last year that it will develop and market 100 unique “high-impact” bikes in the coming decade, clearly a sign they intend to raise their game in a relatively static U.S. market. With new chassis and a family of new engines all designed to be cost-effectively evolved and developed, and also thanks to Harley’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) in-house hot rodding capability, Harley will bring more than new paint schemes and trim pieces each of the next ten years. With layers of both minor decorative and significant functional pieces available from dealerships, buyers should strive to create a bike unlike any other.

H-D
To reduce fatigue across the upper body, the fairing deflects wind from the rider’s chest while leaving the head in a clean stream of air. Modeled after the “batwings” of Harley’s touring models, the fairing mounts to the fork tubes with quick-release clamps. Fairings with a 4-inch taller windshield are available to further reduce upper body and neck muscle fatigue at highway speeds.
Harley recently unveiled its ninth variant of the new Softail chassis, the Sport Glide, which in many regards defines the classic Harley of our collective unconscious: amply proportioned Softail, low-slung seat, Milwaukee-Eight motor rigidly mounted to the frame for the Milwaukee Vibrator experience, loads of torque at very low revs for pulling away from lights and the curb in style, and practicality to serve workaday duties thanks to easily detached batwing fairing and saddlebags.

Sport Glide has LED lights all around: headlamp, tail and brake lamp and turn signals.
A veritable wisp of a girl in the Harley universe, Sport Glide weighs 670 lbs., not 800. If you aspire to be one of those women I see riding Harleys to chic cantinas along Pacific Coast Highway anywhere between San Diego and Santa Barbara—tightly braided ponytail, Perisol shades, fashionista leather and jeans—you must be fit and physically strong enough to balance the bike at lights and curbside. Even with a low saddle allowing feet planted firmly to pavement, 670 lbs. is a lot of heft. That said, changes to handlebars and pegs at the dealer can tailor a riding position comfortable and wieldy for petite women or lanky men. All for just shy of $19,000.
H-D
Electronic throttle control brings standard electronic cruise control, a big help on highway sections when the right hand might benefit from a little isometric shake, squeeze, and wrist roll to relieve tension reaching up the forearm.

Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, at the plenary on Wednesday read a letter from President

Muhammadu Buhari seeking the approval of the legislature for the withdrawal of $496m from the Excess

Crude Account for the purchase of military aircraft.

Buhari, in the letter, however, disclosed that the money had been withdrawn and paid to the United States

for the 12 Super Tucano aircraft, ahead of legislative approval.

This, he said, was done to beat the deadline for the arms deal. The planes will be delivered in 2020.

The President said, “Recently, approval was granted by the United States government, but with a deadline,

within which part payment must be made otherwise the contract relapses.

“In the expectation that the National Assembly will have no objection to the purchase of these highly

specialized aircraft, which is critical to national security, I granted anticipatory

approval for the release of $496,374,470.

“This was paid directly into the treasury of the United States government." I am therefore writing, seeking

approval of the Senate for the sum of $496,374,470 (equivalent to

N151,394, 421,035) to be included in the 2018 Appropriation Bill which the National Assembly is

currently finalizing.

“The balance for the requirement for critical operational equipment is still being collated from the different

security services and will be presented in the form of a supplementary

appropriation bill in due course.”

Buhari recalled that due to the “security emergencies” in the country, which was discussed with state

governors, the National Economic Council on December 14, 2017 approved that

up to $1bn be released and utilized from the Excess Crude Account to address the situation.

Senator Mathew Uroghide (PDP, Edo-South), however, raised a point of order to declare Buhari’s action “

illegal.”

Uroghide said in part, “I heard very clearly when you read the letter that came from Mr. President over the

payment that was made for the Tucano aircraft. I was completely taken

aback because I represent a people.

“This is as letter that you just read to us now, with due respect to the office and the status of Mr. President, I

want to say that what he just said, which you just read to us, is a violation

of some of the provisions of the Constitution.

“I stand on it with every vehemence and I want to read Section 80 (1),(2),(3) and (4) of the Constitution.”

The lawmaker read the sections of the Constitution he made reference to.

He added, “What you just read to us violates these provisions. Mr. President couldn’t have ever, and no

Nigerian citizen that is up and active under the provisions of the Constitution, is

allowed to make any disbursement or any approval coming from any quarter, whether it is by the Council of

State of the Federation or the committee of the governors or anybody in the Presidency, without approval or

appropriation from this Assembly.

“I think it important that we remind ourselves, because if we sit down here, tomorrow, posterity will judge

us.”

Saraki interrupted Uroghide, noting that the matter would be taken at another time. He however admitted

that the lawmaker had raised a valid point.

The Senate President also hinted that the matter might be raised at the next legislative day (Thursday) based

on its importance and urgency.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s
percieved preference of former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, to
emerge as the next national chairman of the party was not binding on it.

The party also said it will review its timetable for congresses and convention set for
May 14.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known to
journalists in Abuja.

Mr Oshiomhole is expected to challenge incumbent chairman John Odigie-Oyegun
for the position although the latter has not formally announced he would seek
reelection.

Whomever emerges is expected to lead the APC into the 2019 general elections.
Speaking on the issue of Mr Buhari’s choice of Mr Oshiomole as national chairman
for the party, Mr Abdullai said the president’s choice was not binding on the party.

“What we were told at the meeting was that he was asked who he wanted and he
told them his preference which has nothing to do with the meeting today,” he said.

He said the review of the timetable was because some governors at the ongoing
National Working Committee meeting said dates for the congresses/convention ”are
too close”.

About a week ago, the party released the timetable showing the schedule of
activities from ward congresses to the national convention.

The official also said the meeting addressed the need to hold transparent, free and
fair elections, ”so as to avoid issues that trail congresses and conventions which
was the reason the party gave for wanting to extend the tenure of party officials.”
“It was a technical meeting that was organised to review our preparedness towards
the congresses and convention. It is also to have the opportunity to emphasise to
the state governors the need to ensure the congresses were held in a very
transparent manner and ensure the processes were free and fair. Because we are
aware that some governors have
been making statements that we believe have given the impression that we don’t
intend to have congresses in some states.

“If you recall, one of the major concerns of the party is that we should try as much
as possible to avoid rancour that could be generated from congresses. So, it was
acknowled that the one major way to avoid rancour is to ensure the congresses are
transparent and acceptable to a majority of the persons concerned.”

Mr Abdullahi also said the list of members of the congresses committees will be
ready by Friday.

Speaking on some of the issues raised by the governors, he said the initial timetable
was set ”with Ramadan in view so as not to conduct any political activity during
that period.”

“There were also observations from the side of the governors about the timetable
for the congresses and convention, and the observation was that the timetable was
closely packed and that it doesn’t leave much room for errors but the observation
was that the timetable as it is currently composed was determined because of the
Ramadan. We want to be
sensitive to the feelings of Muslims who will be fasting in the month of Ramadan.
Therefore, we tried avoid conducting any political activity during the month of
Ramadan.

“There were also other arguments. Therefore, there is a possibility the timetable
will be reviewed. So it’s not decided yet, we agreed that the NWC will take a second
look at the timetable and see the possibility for adjustment.”

The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, said another issue raised concerning
the timetable was that the congresses were set to hold on weekdays ”which will be
problem as they use schools and secretariats which will not be available on
weekdays so they suggested they be conducted on weekends”.

He also hinted that if the timetable is changed, the convention might be after the
Ramadan.

”In that respect, the NWC has been mandated to go and fashion it out. Also, it may
fall within the Ramadan time, we will make consultations to see if only one
congress can be held during Ramadan then after Salah we hold the national
convention. I think that will be sorted out and the national committee is working
on that.

“Also, we all agreeed that the NWC will organise the congresses from the ward,
local government and states while the the committee for the national convention
will organise the national convention. We also agreed that zoning will be
maintained for the officers but also that those governors within that zone should go
and discuss but the post(s) will reamain as it is.”

Governors present at the meeting were: Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara; Rochas
