2019: Bode George, Oyinlola in verbal war over comments on Obasanjo-backed movement
A former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, are currently engaged in a verbal conflict over the latter’s aspersions on the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM).
Mr George had in a recent interview criticised the leaders of the movement which Mr Oyinlola heads as its national coordinator.
He had in the interview dismissed the CNM movement led by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying it would have no impact on the outcome of the 2019 elections.
The former Osun State governor knocked Mr George for his interview, eliciting a reaction on Sunday from the former PDP national officer.
“I read today the untidy, uncharitable and irritable vituperations of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola against my good self. I was rather astonished at the level of uninformed , reckless, misleading verbiage against me,” Mr George’s statement read.
“Prince Oyinlola was very junior to me in the military. I am very senior to him in age. It was my humble self and the late Chief S.M. Afolabi who introduced him to our former President and my Egbon Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. It was through me and the grace of God Almighty that he was elected Governor of Osun State.
“Oyinlola should not dabble into issues he does not know anything about at all. I have served several generals with hundred percent loyalty. I have no grudge against our former President. I have a lot of respect for him. I greet him wherever we meet with deep respect and reverence as a well born Yoruba man.
“Oyinlola, please don’t start to open any can of worms that you do not know where it will widen and spill over. When one is sent a slave’s errand, you should behave like a true, well born.”
However, Mr Oyinlola’s statement on Sunday noted that he only told Mr George, in a statement on Saturday, to stop throwing stones at his benefactors.
He said his admonition to Mr George was that as an officer and a gentleman, it was uncharitable to repay good with evil by attacking his (George’s) benefactors, particularly Mr Obasanjo.
“If you are allergic to the singing of birds you won’t build your house near the bush,” he said.
“If Chief George didn’t want me to react to him, he won’t call me and other promoters of the CNM all sorts of names as he did.
“Our ancestors in Yorubaland did not recommend kolanut as appreciation for the kind of negative words Chief George used against me and other leaders of the CNM including Chief Obasanjo.
“Chief George is my egbon by six years. I respect him and said so in my statement on Saturday. I observed he also said he was “very senior” to me in the military. He used the word ‘very.’
“It will interest him to know that I joined the Nigerian Army on September 3, 1969 and was commissioned as an officer on September 11, 1971. I want my egbon to do his calculations and justify the word ‘very’ that he used.
“However, the fact of his seniority to me in age and otherwise, has always informed the respect I have for him. But I also know that his Ile Ife title, Atona Oodua, makes some demands of him which include civility in words and action and loyalty to friends and benefactors.
“That was why I asked him to apologise to Chief Obasanjo and stop attacking anything and anyone that is connected to him.”
Mr Oyinlola also denied the claims by Mr George that it was through his effort that he became governor, arguing that he became governor by the overwhelming support of the people of Osun State.
“The results of that election showed clearly that my support was rooted in the people and not in outsiders who neither voted nor funded my election. I know my leaders whose support was greatly invaluable,” said Mr Oyinlola.
“They were with me throughout the unprecedented three primaries which I won three times. Chief George started out as a backer of one of those I was contending with. He later switched over to the popular side which was mine. He did not vote in my election; he did not give me money. So how did he make me governor?
“I also like to state that I combine the fine qualities of a prince and a gentleman officer and therefore I am not an ‘omo’ that can be sent on any errand. Chief George will recall how I moved the entire Osun state PDP machinery in protest against the then President Obasanjo and walked away from the party’s national convention in Abuja.
“That was me and nothing has changed in the way I react when necessary. When I need to make my point, I do not need the prodding of anyone to do so. It is not everyone who acts based on such a conviction and I believe Chief George knows this.
“I am also interested in the content of the can of worms which Chief George alluded to. I believe members of the public also look forward to it from our dear Atona Oodua.”
Saraki’s aide, Bamikole Omishore, speaks on corruption allegations
Bamikole Omishore, a media aide to Senate President Bukola Saraki, has declined to confirm or deny reports that he fleeced the public treasury using his wife as a ghost worker.
The Punch newspaper reported earlier on Sunday that Mr Omishore, 35, enrolled his wife as a staff of the National Assembly and had been drawing salaries on her name. . The paper said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced criminal investigation after learning that Abiola Omishore lives in the United States where she works as a nurse.
Mr Omishore, a Diaspora affairs aide to the senate president, would neither confirm nor deny the allegations when reached for comments by PREMIUM TIMES Sunday night.
“For the avoidance of doubt, other than speculations and innuendos on pages of papers and websites, neither me nor my wife has received any copy of petition from EFCC or any other security agency.
”I will address issues contained in any petition against me when I receive it,” he said in a WhatsApp message.
Mr Omishore did not respond to further requests for him to speak on the specific allegations raised against him in the publication.
The story said Mrs Omishore drew N150,000 in monthly ghost-working salaries from taxpayers’ money from her base in America. Mr Omishore was also accused of fabricating National Assembly identification credentials for his wife.
Over a three-year period, the accumulated fleece has entered millions, the paper reported. Sometimes the salaries for several months would hit Mrs Omishore’s bank account, said to be with GTBank, at once as if clearing backlog.
The allegations were contained in a petition filed against Mr Omishore by anti-corruption campaigners.
Wilson Uwujaren, a spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed receipt of the petition and said investigations had commenced, the Punch reported.
A former banker in the U.S., Mr Omishore served as a digital media aide to Mr Saraki since 2015, during which he took on critics of his principal. He was named a Diasporan affairs aide in 2017, but he could still be seen releasing press statements on behalf of his principal while pushing back against unfavourable reports against the senate president.
Yusuf Olaniyonu, a spokesperson for Mr Saraki, did not immediately respond yo PREMIUM TIMES request for comments Sunday night.
A 24-year-old pilot and model in the Big Brother Naija (BBN) reality show, MiracleIgbokwe, has been crowned winner of the competition, carting home the cash prize of N25million, an SUV and other benefits totaling N45 million during a glamorous finale in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sunday night.
Miracle who had showed traits of winning, having led the votes chart each time he was put up for possible eviction, and came tops during series of tasks since January 28, 2018 when the show opened, beats fellow finalists – Tobi Bakre, Cynthia Nwadiora, Nina Chinonso and Alexandra Asogwa.
He had earlier earned over N3million coming from winning House tasks such as Pepsi Challenge, Payporte Challenge, Close-Up Challenge, and scooped to himself, the N200, 000 wager in the last week.
He had been Head of House several times and contributed to entertaining fans with dramas, intrigues, tasks, gossips, and betrayals, while also being noted for his romance with fellow housemate, Nina throughout the 24/7-three months live broadcast.
It didn’t come to many as a surprise that he won the show, as most viewers hold the view that he was the housemate with the least tussle with other contestants, while his status as a pilot might have also endeared fans to him.
The energy was ‘double’ in the South African studio when he was brought to the sage with Cee-C. The shout of Miracle! Miracle!! Miracle!!! by supporters rent the air.
Miracle who hails from Imo State, recently graduated from the Aviation School, and entered the Big Brother Naija house with his pilot license tightly in hand.
The charming housemate who plans to use part of the N45million prize to get more aeronautic training and the rest to help his family said while canvassing for votes: “Coming here is a deal for me, winning this money is a bigger deal to me. I would use the money to go for my CPL training as a professional pilot. Help me abeg and vote for me.”
Cee-C, while canvassing for votes last week hinged her plea on some unnamed projects she will be needing the money for. “Nigerians please vote for me to win this money. I cannot give a particular reason to vote for me. I can’t say because I’m beautiful or attractive but Nigerians please vote for me. Vote for me because I have lots of projects to achieve with this money,” she stated.
Tobi on his part was going to use the money to boost his photography business.
According to the former staff of Heritage Bank, “For a 28-year-old, I have a finance background, so I know what to do with the money; I would not waste it in clubs.
“My photography, I need to expand that business because I don’t have plans of going behind the desk anytime soon. I need you guys to vote let’s get that money.”
While Nina said “I have always had the dream of becoming someone in future and this is just it. I am pleading to Nigerians, Africans to support me to achieve this dream of mine.”, Alex said “I need the money in my life to treat my dad, finish school and take care of my siblings.”
Ebuka who entered the House in an unusual manner, announced Nina’s eviction first. Her eviction was soon followed by that of Alex and Tobi, before Miracle was declared winner.
Other housemates who were earlier evicted include Vandora, Bitto, Princess, DEE-One, Angel, Ahneeka, K-Brule, Leo, Ifu Ennada, Khloe, Anto, Teddy A, Bambam, Lolu and Rico Swavey.
It was an emotional moment for fans of the show across Africa, who must have voted vigorously in the last week, raising the stake for the three top contestants.
The show which began broadcast on January 28, 2018 closed Sunday night with host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu announcing the results during a live show that had artistes including Davido with ‘Fia’, “Like That’ and “Fall” and Mr Real with ‘Legbegbe’, performing for the excited studio guests.
At a streaming center in Lagos, top celebrities, former housemates and recently evicted contestants like Lolu, Anto, Teddy A and Bambam, where part of the crowd that had ‘official’ supporters of the finalists.
The Lagos event was anchored by former BBNaija’s Housemate, Bisola Aiyeola.
APC senator criticises party’s own governor over Sukuk bond

A senator, David Umaru (APC-Niger East), has kicked against plans by Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger to take a N21.5 billion Sukuk bond.
Mr Umaru and the governor are both members of Nigeria’s ruling APC. Like in Niger, many APC senators are having political squabbles with their state governors.
In Kaduna, the two APC senators in the state voted against the APC-led state government as the Senate blocked the government from accessing foreign loans.
Mr Umaru, who made his stance known on Sunday during a press conference in Minna, said that the bond would plunge the state into ‘outrageous indebtedness’.
NAN reports that the state government last week announced that it was seeking a N21.5 billion Sukuk bond for infrastructural development.
The senator stated that the administration lacked the capacity to make judicious use of the funds from the Sukuk bonds if accessed.
According to him, Mr Bello had failed to account for billions of money accrued from statutory allocation to the state including other financial interventions from the federal government.
“It is on record that over N114 billion was accessed by the Bello administration between 2015 and 2017 as net (Federal Account Allocation Committee) FAAC Allocation.
“Nigerlites are still asking as to how the bail out funds from the federal government and disbursements from the Paris Club refunds allegedly amounting to about N250 billion were utilised.
“How have these huge resources translated to providing critical development infrastructure necessary for the economic and social development that would reduce poverty in the state,” he added.
Mr Umaru noted that while the people of the state were still groaning under the heavy debts burden incurred by the past administration, the governor had chosen to add to their pains.
“It is disturbing that the waste of resources and lack of accountability that characterised (former governor) Aliyu’s administration seems minute when compared with financial recklessness of this government.
“While past administration left a total sum of N44 billion as external debts and N30 billion as internal debts, the present administration appear ready to break such ugly record with heavier debt burden,” he noted
The senator also decried the lopsided distribution of projects in favour of the governor’s zone, adding that some projects which had been captured severally in previous bonds reappeared in this bond proposal.
“It is equally important to point out that the administration has failed woefully to equitably distribute projects under the bond across the three senatorial zones.
“The lopsided distribution of the projects in favour of the governor’s zone is highly regrettable and unacceptable because he got votes from the three zones to assume office.
“And again, Minna township roads project captured severally in the other bond facilities taken by the past administration, has reappeared again.
“The question now is why is government recycling this same project. Is it because it has become a conduit pipe to siphon public fund,” he asked.
The lawmaker further faulted the timing of the bond, wondering why the government was seeking the facility now, with barely a year to the end of its tenure.
He urged the State House of Assembly to withhold approval on the loan request to save the state from further impoverishment, saying giving him the nod to access the facility will amount to mortgaging the future of the state.
However, in a swift reaction, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Danjuma Sallau, said the projects executed with the bail out funds from the federal government and Paris club refunds were there for every one to see.
The commissioner said that the funds were used to pay salary arrears of workers as well as rehabilitate schools in the state.
Mr Sallau said that the Sukuk bond would be used for the construction of Minna township roads, trailer park in Suleja, Kontagora water works, Mariga modern market and mining city development among others.
There was no full house at Emirates Stadium on Sunday against West Ham to pay homage to an outgoing icon, and Wenger has taken the opportunity to hit out at those who have made his job untenable at times.
He told reporters following a 4-1 victory over the Hammers: “I was not tired. I believe that this club is respected all over the world, much more than in England. Our fans didn't give the image of unity I want at the club. That was hurtful.”
Wenger faced protests against his ongoing presence throughout the 2016-17 season, with that campaign taken from the streets to the sky on occasion.
He was, however, to oversee a seventh FA Cup triumph of his tenure and earn a two-year contract extension.
That agreement will not be honoured, with the 68-year-old now preparing to step aside and bring the curtain down on an era which will live long in the memory.
But, while a legendary Scot moved from the dugout to a directorial post at Old Trafford, Wenger is preparing to sever all ties with the Gunners.
He added: “Ferguson it was different. He's still at the club. He stayed at Manchester United... Honestly I cannot tell you much more, I don't want you to come back to me in six months and say 'you lied to us'. I know I did that a few times.”
Wenger maintains that he will never “completely leave” Arsenal, given the role they have played in his professional career, but he has already stated that he will not be retiring this summer.
For now, he is looking to make the most of the time he has left at the Emirates, with the Gunners still chasing down Europa League glory.
The securing of major silverware would provide a fitting ending to a memorable spell in north London, with Wenger having already seen glowing tributes paid to him from across the world of sport.
“I'm touched by all the praise I've got from English football... I know that I will not get that anymore in my life,” he said.
"I don't need to die anymore. Apart from a little sense of humour I would like to thank everybody who has been a bit nice to me. I certainly got more praise than I deserved. And maybe more criticism.
2019: Keyamo ‘verbal assaulted’ in Awka for supporting Buhari
Oladeinde Olawoyin
Less than a week after he made public he had been appointed spokesperson of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election campaign, radical lawyer Festus Keyamo reportedly faced verbal assault outside a court premises over his new appointment.
The incident happened on Friday at the premises of the Anambra State Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra State.
A civic group, Conscience Nigeria, confirmed the incident in a statement, but asked Mr Keyamo to ignore his attackers.
The aggrieved individuals allegedly accused Mr Keyamo of “selling out” by accepting to support Mr Buhari’s re-election bid and serve as its campaign organisation’s official spokesperson.
Mr Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, however narrated a different version of the incident.
Speaking in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES Sunday evening, Mr Keyamo denied that he was attacked, saying a “known PDP thug” in the area committed the act. The lawyer, who spoke to our correspondent from Ghana, said he could not have been assaulted because the people are in support of the Buhari government.
“First of all, the report was wrong; nobody attacked me,” he told PREMIUM TIMES on telephone. “There was no such thing. I went to do my normal legal work in Awka; I went to defend some persons in Awka.”
“When I was coming out of court, there were large number of people and they were all congratulating me and were very happy with me. Then one known PDP thug in that area who is not a businessman, a known PDP thug, was at a distance. He was just shouting that they will not vote for Buhari, they will not vote for Buhari. And some of the members of the crowd said ‘Vote for your own choice now’.
“It was as simple as that. That was what happened and then I entered my vehicle and left. There was no such thing at all.”
Mr Keyamo said the crowd would have lynched the “PDP thug” if he had physically attacked him because they were in support of Mr Buhari’s re-election campaign.
He said, “I had kept quiet all the while, I didn’t respond. There was no attack. Attack me? How? The crowd would have lynched him if he attacked me. There was a large crowd there who was also very happy with us, saying they will vote for the president. So he (“PDP thug”) was just a lone voice.”
The human rights lawyer also explained that he is standing on the side of the Nigerian people who voted the present government by supporting the government.
“This president defeated an incumbent. This president was popularly elected by 15 million Nigerians. It was a popularly elected government, not a military government,” he said.
“Anybody who is supporting this government like us is taking side with the majority of Nigerians at least until the next elections before we know whether those 15 million people have vanished or not. Anybody who is supporting the government now is taking side with Nigerians who elected him.”
In its statement, Conscience Nigeria advised Mr Keyamo not to be distracted in his appointment as the Director, Strategic Communications for Mr Buhari’s 2019 presidential campaign.
A statement by the Executive Director of the organisation, Tosin Adeyanju, said courageous men and women are needed at this time to set a new agenda for the country and help drive the developmental agenda of the present government.
“We are more than convinced that the political environment would be interesting in the coming months as Keyamo engage the people on this task of selling the candidature of Mr President which we are convinced has all it takes to get the job done,” the group said.
The Presidency has reacted to a viral Facebook post purportedly by Zahra Buhari, the President’s daughter.
A Faebook page with the name, Zahra Buhari recently featured a post with a picture of President Buhari walking on an airport runway in the snow.
The post, which has since gone viral, was published on April 17, and reads:
“Children of God, here is a 75 years old man walking in the snow without Cardigan just to rescue the battered economic status of Nigeria and some of you senseless people feel he travels too much as if he travels for partying or merry making?
“God bless Nigeria
“Please share…”
However, the Presidency has vehemently denied any connection with the post.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement, described the person(s) behind the page and post as “merchants of mischief.”
The statement reads:
“Merchants of mischief have taken their antics against the first family further by creating a fake Facebook account in the name of Zahra, President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter.
“The fake account, conspicuously different from the authentic one, was used to post a message on April 17, 2018, at 9.07 a.m.
“A picture of President Buhari, with snowflakes all over him, and being welcomed to a foreign country was used, alongside this message:
“Children of God, here is a 75 years old man walking in the snow without cardigan just to rescue the battered economic status of Nigeria and some of you senseless people feel he travels too much, as if he travels for partying or merry making.
“God bless Nigeria. Please share…”
“The Presidency hereby repudiates the Facebook account, as it does not belong to Zahra. Members of the public are urged to be wary, and see through the intentions of those behind the fakery. They seek to attract odium to the first family, and also do not mean well for our country.”
